C-03. DOG TEETH PECTORAL

Sassoya, Prince Alexander Ranges, east Sepik, PNG

Dog teeth are part of the ceremonial attire and also wealth trade along the entire North Coast of papua New Guinea. The Boiken make aesthetically beautiful chest ornaments with dog teeth, combined with nassa and conus shells, that are attached to a finely woven triangular form, made by men. On occasions these dog teeth ornaments may also be used in elaborate decoations of ceremonial dance masks.
