S-13. CLUB, TONGA

19th Century
A fine, beautifully carved, and simple “apa’apai” club. It is characterised by 5 sections of ringed ridges dividing the upper half. Sometimes the un-ridged parts between are engraved; it would seem the ridges on this club are too close together to allow this to be done elegantly – and above all else, Tongan clubs are among the most elegant in the Pacific. An overall wonderful patina.
