TAPA FIRE DANCING MASK

Baining people, East New Britain, PNG

Dramatic Fired Dances are performed by the Baining people, only at night,

It is traditionally a rite of passage for initiating young men into adulthood, a dance that women and children never attended. It combines also some elements of harvest and remembering the dead. Generally these masks are tall and wide, with large round eyes. This mask is a small example; well made . It is made from bamboo, with bark from the mulberry tree stretched over, and painted.
