Such marriage veils are no longer made with such fine weaving and shellwork.

This piece was collected in the late 1980s, and was made originally for the grandmother of the owner – sometime in the 1920s. They are made by men, for the women and then handed down from mother to daughter.

It is from Prugunaui village, an Iatmul village of the Upper Sepik River.
