INITIATION APRON, beron, Watam Lagoon, Lower Sepik River, PNG.

This apron is used in a male initiation ceremony called kandinbung which takes place at puberty. The face represents a powerful spirit whose power is revealed to the initiates, and the hanging tassles are referred to as fish forms.  A long bark apron at the back opens to 130 cm long.
