M22 Mask, Mundugumor
Mundugumor people
Yuat River, Lower Sepik River, Papua New Guinea
Ex-Wayne Heathcote, UK. Originally collected in the 1970s in a small village west of the Yuat River mouth. Early 20th Century.
The mask is deeply carved and colored in typical Mundugumor colors. The numerous holes around the edge originally supported a cane framework that covered the head, and also supported a long sago leaf skirt that covered the dancer’s body.
