M30 "Rimbu" Dance Headdress

Kewabi people
Southern Highlands, PNG

These woven cane headdress/masks are used by the Kebabi people of the Malibu-Kagua region in ceremonial festivals.  In the Highlands of PNG very few masks are made, and these headrests that partly cover the face, are the Highland equivalent of New Guinea coastal masks. The one exception, are the small gourd masks that are made for a specific ceremony, and usually discarded afterwards.

Size: 37 x 38 cm (central woven circle )
