nalot, Banks Is, Solomon Is. 19th Century
Both pounders are long and elegant, with a wonderful old patias. The faces, as typical of Banks Is sculpture, are very minimalist, almost abstract. They have that simplified anthropomorphic aesthetic so loved by the early modernist artists. Both were collected by Captain Guenet on the French ship Le Rolinante in early 1950s, ex-collection Nicolai Michoutouchkine ( 1929-2010 ), ex-collection Wayne Heathcote.
