S-14 Shield, Upper Lai Valley

Lai Valley, Southern Highlands, Papua New Guinea

An old shield, with many layers of paint. The Lai valley, the next valley to the Mendi Valley, is actually quite remote, with no roads; and the most remote area of all is the Upper Lai Valley. Fighting has been recorded here even in recent years, where warriors still fight with traditional weapons, even though guns can be used on occasions. These ghostly-like figures depicted on fighting shields are found only in this region of the Upper Lai Valley. This is a good old shield.
