M-33 FINE OLD YAM MASK

Abelam people, PNG

A fine old mask, with semi-spherical face, round white eyes and subtle orange coloration. This yam mask is woven from fine cane and show paint levels that suggest it has been repainted many times. Each harvest ceremony, when the large yams are lined up and decorated, these brightly painted woven masks are attached, together with some shell finery, feathers and colourful leaves. The yam lining ceremony (rarely seen today) was important to foster fertility for the proceeding season. Spiritual support was always essential in every aspect of life.
