O-30 OLD BASKET HOOK, ”SAMBAN”

Middle Sepik River, PNG

This is a fine old hook showing much use on the hooked lower hooked section from which hang the bags and baskets, which are contantly being placed and removed; also an old patina on the top ring where the Basket Hook is tied to the rafters for suspension. Two faces look in opposite directions, possibly the two brothers legend found throughout the Sepik region. The fine engraved designs represent importantly crocodile skin motifs, and also those relating the wind, and ripples on the water as this wind blows.

Collected by Ed Boylan in 1971-72 on a small island in Chambri Lake.
