SW-10 Fighting Shield

Wahgi Valley, Western Highlands, Papua New Guinea.

This is a large traditional fighting shield, slightly curved to protect the warrior, with four knotted cane ropes supporting a carrying sling on the back. The design is bold and abstract; with a large central circle, and radiating linear motifs. Red and white predominate.

Early contact period (1940s-1950s).
