SW-19 Fighting Shield

‘warrumbi” Nipa Valley, Southern Highlands, PNG.

Shields are invariably oval in shape and carved from the wood of a tree calle warr. The bold red circular design is essentially abstract, and painted brightly, unlike the warrior who carries the shield, is generally black. Some informants have suggested that the circle is the “navel” of the shield, giving it an anthropomorphic meanin.
